Justice Surya Kant, who took oath as 53rd Chief Justice of India at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on Monday, reiterated that right to freedom of speech and expression “is doubtless one of our most valued rights” requiring further strengthening but emphasised the need for a framework that “ensures responsibility, accuracy and respect in public discourses”. His tenure will be closely watched for how he deals with the huge pendency and the SIR related cases.
Hot off the Press
The Chief Justice, who has a tenure of little over a year till his retirement on February 2, 2027, has said his topmost priority would be to bring the pendency of over 90000 cases in the top court to a manageable number.
