Former AFR editor-in-chief calls time at Nine to run independent think tank

By Staffwriter in Media News on
Michael Stutchbury.   Michael Stutchbury has left the Financial Review a little more than a year after standing down as editor-in-chief to join an influential centre-right think tank, reports The Australian’s Thomas Henry. Stutchbury, who led the paper for 13 years before stepping into the role of editor-at-large, announced his departure from the newsroom in a message to staff on Monday to take up an “exciting opportunity” at the Centre for Independent Studies. The former media boss previously moved from Nine (then Fairfax) to The Australian as editor for five years, before returning to become the longest serving editor or editor-in-chief in the AFR’s seven-decade history. He touted a strong association between the CIS and his former paper, suggesting the two had “mostly shared an intellectual worldview which I am keen to continue at my new digs”. “As a reporter and editor, I have followed and reported on the CIS since the 1980s. It was clear then that intellectu

By Suganthi Marimuthu in Media News on
In an era flooded with visuals and algorithmic feeds, the camera remains a potent instrument of truth. But as smartphones blur the line between creator and consumer, photojournalism is undergoing a quiet transformation, one that demands not just speed, but integrity, context and consent. T. Vijay, a photojournalist with Ananda Vikatan, is among those adapting to this evolving landscape. “I capture only what aligns with my purpose,” he says, describing how he avoids photographing scenes that do not add meaning or show respect to the subject. For Vijay, ethics are not a checklist but a daily practice, seeking consent where necessary, and making editorial decisions in real time. “During public events like political rallies or emergencies, consent may not be feasible, but even then, I document responsibly,” he adds. He recalls a moment that shaped his career—a ride from Masinagudi to Ooty nearly 15 years ago, when he passed a dead monkey on the road, killed by a speeding veh
