Veteran journalist and former SMH editor Judith Whelan passes away
By Staff writers in Media News on Thursday, 27th June 2024 at 4:44pmJudith Whelan, a prominent journalist and former editor of the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH), passed away on Wednesday, June 26, at the age of 63 after being diagnosed with cancer. Whelan, who also served as an ABC executive, joined the national broadcaster in 2016 after a distinguished career in journalism.
Whelan made history as one of only three female editors of the SMH. She also spent seven years leading the Good Weekend magazine. At the ABC, she initially held the position of director, Regional and Local, before becoming the editorial director in 2022. Her career also included stints as a foreign correspondent in the Pacific and Europe, and she was a Walkley-nominated news and feature writer.
