Today's Ten: Supreme Court greenlights sub-classification of SC quota

In a landmark verdict that is likely to rekindle intense debate and discussion on how to take the reservation policy forward, the Supreme Court on Thursday permitted states to sub-categorise castes within the Scheduled Caste community based on socio-economic backwardness and degree of under-representation in government jobs to ensure that the larger pie of the 15 per cent SC quota goes to the most backward among the community. The seven-member bench, which ruled in a six-to-one majority in favour of sub-categorising, also asked governments to devise suitable criteria to bar the 'creamy layer' among SCs and STs from availing reservation.
