Athina Mallis launches "So, Apparently"

Journalist Athina Mallis is returning to the keyboard as she launches her new Substack newsletter, “So, Apparently”. The former Gizmodo Australia managing editor described it as “the newsletter to read when you've had a long day and need a bit of brain rot time.” ‘So, Apparently’ will channel her experience from past employers Gizmodo and Digital Nation and will cover anything from pop culture, consumer tech and internet culture. “As someone who is chronically online, and is obsessed with all things pop culture I thought I would start my own newsletter,” she wrote, in a response to Influencing. Viacom18-Star India merger to be finalised by Q3 FY25

Viacom18 and Star India Private Limited are progressing towards finalising their merger by the third quarter of FY25. The merger aims to create a robust entity of the two media giants, to compete against major players in the streaming sector.   Viacom18 and Star India Private Limited have obtained key approvals from the Competition Commission of India for their proposed transaction. The companies also received the National Company Law Tribunal, Mumbai Bench’s sanction for the Scheme of Arrangement.  The merger of TV18 Broadcast Ltd. (TV18), and e-Eighteen.com Ltd. (E18) with Network18 Media & Investments Ltd. (Network18) through a Scheme of Arrangement was sanctioned by the National Company Law Tribunal, Mumbai Bench and was made effective on October 3, 2024. C Shyam Sundar, a seasoned sports journalist, has started a new role as senior assistant editor at The Hindu.  In his new role, he is responsible for editing copies, coordinating with reporters, and reporting.   Sundar was a sports correspondent at the Press Trust of India (PTI) before joining The Hindu.   “It feels great to join The Hindu, which has a wonderful legacy in the newspaper industry,” Sundar told Influencing India.   With nearly two decades of experience in sports journalism, Sundar stated that his “interest in sports and playing cricket and tennis” probably drew him to the field.  He worked as a senior correspondent at Autocar India before joining News Today as a news editor, a position he held for nearly a decade.

After 13 years with ABC News, Julia Feder has announced her move to The Australian Financial Review as managing editor, she shared on LinkedIn.  Reflecting on her time at ABC, Feder expressed gratitude for the experiences and colleagues that shaped her career. Feder previously held key roles at ABC, including deputy news editor for New South Wales and national news gathering editor.  Before ABC, she spent over eight years as a TV news producer and reporter at the Seven Network, and her journalism career began as a federal political reporter at 2GB.  Prior to journalism, Feder worked as a lawyer at MinterEllison, bringing a unique blend of skills to her new role.  

Gus Worland to depart Triple M after 16 Years

After 16 years with Triple M, Gus Worland has announced he will leave the station at the end of the year, Radio Info reported.  Starting as part of The Grill Team, Worland most recently hosted 'The Rush Hour' on 104.9 Triple M Sydney, where he captivated listeners with his unique blend of humour and passion. Worland, who also commentated on cricket broadcasts, will now focus on growing his mental fitness charity, Gotcha4Life, which promotes preventative mental health programs.  “I want to thank everyone I have worked with over the past 16 years,” he said, reflecting on his time with co-hosts like Matty Johns and Mark Geyer. Triple M's Head of Metro Content, Matthew O'Reilly, praised Worland as a beloved figure at the station, stating that he will always be part of the Triple M family.  

Victoria Buchan departs Nine Entertainment amid restructuring

Victoria Buchan, Nine Entertainment’s long-serving director of communications and PR, has been made redundant as part of a corporate restructuring, Mumbrella reported.  Acting CEO Matt Stanton announced her departure in an all-staff email, citing the creation of a new regulatory specialist role. Stanton thanked Buchan for nearly 15 years of service at Nine and highlighted her key role in the company’s restructuring from private equity, the Fairfax merger, and the launch of numerous TV and radio shows.  Buchan will assist with the transition until her official exit at the end of November. In her message to staff, Buchan reflected on her time at Nine and expressed her plans to spend time with family over the summer while exploring new media opportunities.
