Be careful who your friends are. Although Anthony Albanese claimed on Monday that his government’s decision to embrace and endorse Palestinian statehood would be “totally opposed” by Hamas, it turns out not so much. As The Sydney Morning Herald’s Matthew Knott reports in his exclusive “Terror group praises Albanese” (PM faces backlash after Hamas praise” — The Age), Sheik Hassan Yousef, one of Hamas’s most senior leaders in the occupied West Bank, is delighted:
“We welcome Australia’s decision to recognise the state of Palestine, and consider it an important step towards achieving justice for our people and securing their legitimate rights.”
Yousef’s comments were condemned by Israeli deputy foreign minister Sharren Haskell:
