An FIR has been registered against Aaj Tak journalist Anjana Om Kashyap for allegedly making disrespectful remarks about Maharishi Valmiki during a televised debate. The complaint was lodged at Division Number 4 police station in Ludhiana. The case also names India Today Group chairman and editor-in-chief Aroon Purie and Living Media India Ltd as co-accused, according to Hindustan Times. The complaint was filed by Chaudhary Yashpal, national coordinator of the Bhartiya Valmiki Dharam Samaj Bhavadas, who alleged that Kashyap used “inappropriate language” during the debate aired on the channel’s social media platforms, hurting the sentiments of the Valmiki community. “The statements deeply hurt the religious feelings of the entire Valmiki community. To prevent the situation from escalating into a law and order problem, we request that an FIR be registered,” the complaint said. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology has released a detailed report on mechanisms to curb fake news, relating to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, on October 13, 2025. In its 22nd report, the Committee argues that fake news creators, including individuals, groups and AI content generators, spread misinformation across boundaries. The report makes it clear that the underlying problem of spreading fake news is not only who does that, but also why. Manipulative headlines and fabricated videos aim to maximise clicks, increase followers and drive revenue.
