Press bodies condemn Delhi police over sealing of UNI office; allege threat to press freedom

By Staff Writer in Media News on
Press bodies across the country have strongly condemned the sealing of the Delhi office of United News of India (UNI) on March 20, calling it a serious threat to press freedom and democratic functioning. The Press Club of India expressed deep shock over the alleged manhandling of journalists at the UNI premises following a court order related to a land dispute. It condemned the “high-handedness” shown by authorities, noting that journalists, including women, were forcibly removed by personnel of the Delhi Police and central forces and were not allowed to collect their personal belongings. The Club emphasised that the right to work is a constitutional guarantee and urged authorities to take prompt action against those responsible. The Mumbai Press Club also raised serious concerns, citing reports of forcible eviction, alleged manhandling of journalists, and misconduct by police personnel. Allegations of officials being intoxicated on duty and instances of abuse involving pol

Media fraternity in Himachal expresses resentment over budget neglect

By Staff Writer in Media News on
Journalists across Himachal Pradesh have voiced strong displeasure over the alleged neglect of their demands in the state budget. Members of the Himachal Pradesh Union of Journalists said that while the budget included announcements for farmers, gardeners, employees, and pensioners, it failed to address long‑pending concerns of the media fraternity. State President Joginder Dev Arya, along with senior union leaders, criticised what they termed the government’s “indifferent attitude” towards journalists. They stressed that the press, as the fourth pillar of democracy, plays a crucial role in bridging the government and the public, making its exclusion from policy considerations concerning. The union warned that continued neglect could have wider implications for democratic functioning and urged the state government to take an early decision on issues concerning the media community to ease growing dissatisfaction, Dainik Tribute reported.

FOURTH RIGHT: The death of the 'viral' excuse and why Indian TV news should welcome it

By Pragadish Kirubakaran in Media News on
Source: Bar and Bench   For years, Indian television news has operated on one quietly understood editorial principle: if it's trending, it must be covered. A shaky clip, a breathless anchor, a chyron in red caps and prime time practically writes itself. Verification, when it does happen, was something you did after the outrage had already peaked. Sometimes much later. Sometimes never. This week, that model took a long-overdue reckoning. The News Broadcasting & Digital Standards Authority (NBDSA) has tightened its rules on how social media content moves from a stranger's phone to a national broadcast. The directive is plain-spoken: if you didn't verify it, you shouldn't air it. And if you do, slapping a "viral, unverified" disclaimer on screen won't protect you. The authority made that point emphatically while fining Zee News Rs 1 lakh for broadcasting a misleading clip that falsely pinned a traffic jam on the Jammu-Srinagar highway to a truc

Demand grows for Irfan Mehraj’s release after three years in detention

By Staff Writer in Media News on
The demand for the release of Kashmiri journalist Irfan Mehraj has intensified, with over 30 civil society and rights organisations globally urging the Indian government to free him as he completes three years in detention on Friday. In a joint statement, the groups called on the Centre to end what they described as the continued repression of human rights defenders and journalists in Jammu and Kashmir. Mehraj was detained by the National Investigation Agency on March 20, 2023, on terror-related charges, which the 33 organisations have termed politically motivated and fabricated. He is the founding editor of Wande Magazine and has worked with TwoCircles.net, besides contributing to international media outlets such as Deutsche Welle and Al Jazeera. The signatories include Amnesty International, Committee to Protect Journalists, Human Rights Watch, Reporters Without Borders, among others. A few weeks ago, Human Rights Foundation and Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development also
