A Delhi court has summoned Congress leaders Ragini Nayak, Pawan Khera and Jairam Ramesh in connection with a complaint filed by senior journalist Rajat Sharma. The case relates to an allegedly edited video clip that was shared on social media. The court said there is enough initial evidence to move ahead with the case under sections related to forgery and defamation. Judicial Magistrate Devanshi Janmeja passed the order after reviewing the material placed on record. The issue began in June 2024, when claims were made that Sharma had used offensive language against Ragini Nayak during a live TV debate. Sharma denied this, saying the accusations were based on a tampered video that did not match the original broadcast. According to the complaint, Nayak first posted the edited clip on X, after which Khera and Ramesh shared it further and made public remarks.   The Indian Newspaper Society (INS) flagged deepening concerns over the continuing shortage of newsprint in the country, noting that the deficit has pushed newspaper publishers to depend heavily on imports, The Tribune reported. In a statement, the apex body of newspaper publishers said India consumes nearly 1.2 million tonnes of newsprint annually, while domestic output has remained below 0.5 million tonnes. This means local mills are able to supply only about 40 per cent of the requirement, pointing to what the INS described as a significant hollowing out of the sector. The INS observed that this demand-supply mismatch has persisted for over 20 years, with little to no expansion in dedicated newsprint manufacturing capacity during the period. Given this long-standing structural limitation, the society said newspaper publishers have little choice but to turn to imports to maintain uninterrupted printing and distribution. Veteran sports journalist of Tripura and former football referee and cricket umpire Tapan Chakraborty passed away at his residence in the Srinagar area near the TV Centre on Tuesday morning. He was 73 and reportedly died around 6.30 am. His death has cast a pall of gloom over the state’s sports and media fraternity. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter-in-law. Chakraborty began his career in sports as a football referee and later served as a cricket umpire under the Tripura Football Association and the Tripura Cricket Association. With a deep interest in sports, he moved into journalism and joined the Bengali daily Desher Katha in 1985. He remained associated with the newspaper until his death, serving as a sports journalist and editor. He was the founder president of the Tripura Sports Journalists Association and was actively involved in sports and media affairs in the state.
