Tripura journalists seek action on safety threats and press identity misuse

Working journalists in Tripura’s Unakoti district have urged the police to address threats against journalists, alleged impersonation, the movement of narcotics and illegal Burmese cigarettes, and misuse of “Press” stickers on vehicles. A delegation met the Superintendent of Police, Unakoti, on Tuesday and submitted a deputation seeking action on these concerns. The journalists alleged that Bikash Kapali and Nazmul Hossain received death threats through fake social media accounts following their report on the seizure of a suspected narcotic substance. An FIR was lodged at Fatikroy Police Station on August 29, but the delegation claimed there had been no visible progress in identifying those responsible. They also called for stronger surveillance to curb the movement of narcotics and illegal cigarettes, along with action against individuals allegedly misusing press identities and vehicle stickers. Parul University journalism students explore newsrooms during media tour

Journalism and mass communication students from Parul University, Vadodara, completed a six-day Delhi media tour, visiting the Press Trust of India, Hindustan Times, India TV, News18, TV9, Republic and the India Today Network. The students were given insights into newsroom operations across print, wire services and television, covering news verification, reporting, production and broadcast workflows. At PTI, they learned about its three-source verification process, while visits to television newsrooms focused on live production and broadcast operations. NBDSA fines Zee News 2 lakh over AMU protest coverage

The News Broadcasting & Digital Standards Authority (NBDSA) has fined Zee News 2 lakh over its coverage of an August 2025 student protest at Aligarh Muslim University and directed the broadcaster to remove the relevant programmes from its website, YouTube and other platforms. The order followed a complaint by AMU alumnus and research scholar Talha Mannan over Zee News broadcasts aired on August 16, 2025. The protest itself concerned issues including a fee hike and restoration of the AMU Students’ Union, although slogans expressing solidarity with Palestine were also raised during the demonstration. Mannan alleged that the channel selectively used brief portions of the protest and framed participants through references to Palestine, Hamas and extremism, while failing to adequately convey the broader context of the agitation. Assam Police arrest Dhubri journalist in extortion case

Assam Police arrested Dhubri-based journalist Soiodur Rahman on September 12 in connection with an alleged extortion case involving Ayurveda practitioner Dr Chotka Rahman. Police said Rahman was arrested during a targeted operation late Saturday night near the Assam-West Bengal-Bangladesh border. He had allegedly been evading arrest since the case was registered.  According to police, a group of journalists allegedly confronted Dr Rahman at his under-construction medical chamber and pharmacy and demanded Rs 3 lakh, while allegedly threatening him with physical harm. Fearing for his safety, he paid Rs 20,000 in cash at the spot and later transferred another Rs 65,000 through PhonePe.  According to India Today NE, the case had earlier led to the arrest of three other accused.
