Delhi HC Quashes EOW FIR, ED ECIR against NewsClick and Prabir Purkayastha
By Staff Writer in Media News on Friday, 12th June 2026 at 7:57pm
The Delhi High Court has quashed the Economic Offences Wing's (EOW) FIR and the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) ECIR against digital news platform NewsClick and its founder-editor, Prabir Purkayastha, in a case related to alleged irregularities in foreign funding.
Justice Neena Bansal Krishna held that even if the allegations were accepted in their entirety, they did not disclose offences of cheating or criminal breach of trust under Sections 420 and 406 of the IPC.
The case stemmed from allegations that PPK Newsclick Studio Pvt Ltd received ₹9.59 crore in foreign direct investment from U.S.-based Worldwide Media Holdings LLC in 2018-19 through inflated share valuations to circumvent FDI restrictions on digital news platforms.
However, the court observed that there was no FDI cap on digital news media at the time of the investment. It also noted that the share valuation had been conducted by an independent valuer and th

Three Indian merchant seafarers were killed when the US Navy attacked the MT Jalveer and other Palau-flagged oil tankers off the Oman coast on June 8 and 10, with the death toll of Indian seafarers from such strikes rising to seven since the West Asia conflict began. The Indian government acknowledged the attacks and said it was pressing for the safety of maritime family members. Separately, a Navy team safely recovered an unexploded warhead from the fuel storage compartment of a tanker struck near Kochi.
The story combines ground-level identification of victims, official government sourcing, and the Navy's parallel ordnance-recovery operation into a multi-layered account of an escalating maritime crisis dir
Prestige gap or pay gap? Journalists weigh in on English vs regional media salaries
By Pavithra A in Media News on Friday, 12th June 2026 at 3:35pm
For years, English-language journalism was widely perceived as the better-paying and more prestigious side of India's media industry. Regional-language journalists often viewed English newsrooms as offering higher salaries, broader exposure and stronger career prospects.
But as digital platforms reshape the media landscape, journalists say the divide is no longer as clear-cut as it once was.
The rapid growth of regional digital media has expanded audiences far beyond traditional print markets, creating new revenue opportunities and increasing demand for skilled journalists who can produce content in regional languages. While salary disparities continue to exist across organisations and markets, media professionals argue that experience, digital skills and newsroom economics are increasingly becoming more important than language alone.
Sonakshi Saxena, Chief Sub-Editor at Dainik Bhaskar Group, believes the salary gap between English and regional media is often overstated.
