Warning: Grieving Families Being Pressured Into Costly Decisions by Corporate-Owned Funeral Homes Disguised as “Local”

Announcement posted by eziFunerals 01 Jul 2026

Independent funeral advisory service eziFunerals is warning Australian families that many funeral homes marketed as small, local and family-run are in fact owned by large corporate groups — and that sales pressure at the point of grief may be costing families more than they realise.

Australians are being urged to slow down and ask hard questions before choosing a funeral director, following renewed warnings from eziFunerals, an independent funeral advisory and comparison service, about pressure tactics and undisclosed corporate ownership across the industry.

eziFunerals, which has no ownership ties to any funeral home and takes no commission from funeral providers, says the issue is widespread and rarely discussed openly: many well-known, locally branded funeral homes are in fact owned by large corporate groups — a fact families are often unaware of during one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

"Families are often told, or simply assume, they're speaking to a small, local, family-run funeral home, when in reality some of these brands are owned by large national or multinational groups," said Peter Erceg, Owner and Founder of eziFunerals. "That ownership structure isn't always made clear upfront, and it matters — because it can shape the advice and the price a family is offered."

The core issues eziFunerals is warning families about:

  • Undisclosed ownership. A number of funeral homes trade under warm, local-sounding names while belonging to large corporate groups, without always making that ownership clear to families.
  • Sales pressure at the worst possible time. Some families report feeling pressured into upgrades, extra services or add-ons during their very first contact with a funeral director — often within hours of a death.
  • Ad-budget bias. The funeral director a family calls first is often simply the one with the biggest television or radio advertising spend, not necessarily the one best suited to their needs or budget.

"The biggest mistake families make is calling the first number they see on an expensive TV or radio ad," Mr Erceg said. "That advertising has to be paid for somehow, and it's ultimately families who cover that cost. You are in control of this process from the very first phone call — you don't have to decide in a hurry, and you don't have to go with the name you recognise most."

eziFunerals is calling for greater transparency across the industry, including clearer disclosure of funeral home ownership, so families can make informed choices without pressure or confusion.

"Our advice isn't shaped by a sales target, because we don't have one," Mr Erceg said. "We believe every Australian family deserves that."
