Today’s Ten: BJP’s gains in J&K and Haryana prove pollsters wrong again

By Pragadish Kirubakaran in Media News on
In a surprising turn of events, the BJP pulled off a victory in Haryana and made significant inroads in Jammu & Kashmir, contradicting the predictions made by most exit polls. In Haryana, the BJP achieved a historic hat-trick, securing a third consecutive win, as reported by Ariba, Aradhana Kalia and Vikas Pathak from The Indian Express. Meanwhile, in J&K, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) led the charge, yet the BJP emerged as a formidable player, bagging 29 seats in Jammu, according to Peerzada Ashiq of The Hindu. Before the results, exit polls had widely suggested a much weaker performance for the BJP. This led to a frenzy of speculation around potential losses, especially in Haryana. The Times of India, in a piece by Ajay Surya, Akhilesh Singh and Saleem Pandit, even highlighted how Congress strategists were already gearing up to analyse a possible BJP defeat. The actual results, however, left the Congress blindsided and struggling for answers, with the

Plodski hopes Twitch changes boost payments to streamers

By Will McLennan in Media News on
Plodski - aka Andrew Dryden -  hopes that newly introduced measures will address the current Twitch monetary system as reduced payments for affiliated and partnered streamers have lingered for sometime on the streaming platform.  “I believe there's been a new thing as of last week, where Twitch mentioned they’re going to make partnerships a bit easier, which is good because the old Twitch partnership split was 70-30. Where affiliates get 50-50 regardless, but then they used to never count raids [where broadcasters can send the viewers to another stream when finishing up their stream].   The Twitch Affiliate program is for streamers to unlock monetisation and video capabilities to further their build audiences. Dryden achieved this status just two months into his streaming career around Christmas 2017 and came after quietly establishing himself on Twitch.  “I started with no one. I didn't tell anyone I was doing it. I just jumped on and played games like ‘PlayerUnknow

IBDF likely to move TDSAT as Kerala HC dismisses plea against TRAI regulation

By Staff Writer in Media News on
Indian Broadcasting and Digital Foundation (IBDF) is likely to move to the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) after the Kerala High Court dismissed a petition of broadcasters against a notification of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.   According to e4m, the High Court had dismissed the petition as “not maintainable” and said TDSAT was the appropriate forum.   The plea was filed by the Indian Broadcasting and Digital Foundation, Star India, and Viacom18 and challenged the TRAI’s regulation which mandates broadcasters to provide channels on DD Free Dish for free to private distribution platform operators (DPOs).   Telecommunication Services Order 2024, notified on July 8 by TRAI, referred to as the 2024 Tariff Order, states that “a channel which is available at no subscription fee on Prasar Bharati’s DD Free Dish platform shall not be declared as pay channel by broadcasters for addressable distribution platform operators.”   Broad

Today’s Ten: Air thick with conspiracies and controversies as counting gets underway in J&K, Haryana

By Pradeep Damodaran in Media News on
With the much-anticipated results for the Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir polls set to be out by the end of the day, the day's morning papers were full of reports on how parties prepared for the polls. Parties on both sides of the political spectrum exuded confidence in emerging triumphant in the elections, reported The Hindu bureau. Even before counting began, the Congress camp in Haryana witnessed an all-too-familiar tussle over the Chief Minister's post with former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda stating he was "neither tired nor retired" and his rival asserting that the final call would be taken by the High Command. Exit polls revealed that the Congress alliance had an edge over rivals in both states. Amid growing apprehension among Opposition parties over the five members to be nominated to the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, BJP vice-president Sofi Yousuf has said that they will all be BJP leaders and even named the five, reported Bashaarat Masood and Arun Sharma for The Indian Express
