McCarthy exits Newcastle Herald

She stated in her most recent column that after 40 long years, she was done with the business because of recent frustrations over coverage of child abuse in the Catholic church and the pelvic-mesh medical device controversies. She used the story of a grueling Six-Foot Track run she joined years before to outline why she had lost the drive to go on.
“I think it’s good to know when you should finish something and a lot has happened rather suddenly, it makes sense,” she would later say in an interview with ABC On Drive’s Paul Turton.
McCarthy started her journalism career in 1980 as the Gosford Star’s first cadet reporter. She had been with the Herald since 2002.
