Early-career journalist Tim McLachlan says one of the biggest lessons he's learnt is that "no story is too big or too small”, pointing to a story he did on a Sutherland-based All Abilities soccer team around the World Cup.  “The positive feedback from that story was phenomenal. It made me appreciate that there are always people who are interested in those stories,” he told Influencing.  “It's a real privilege to be able to tell those people's stories, and also humbling seeing how grateful they were that I had come to talk to them. Ranchi-based journalist Nitin Chaudhary, who died in Delhi on Sunday after battling blood cancer for nearly two years, will be remembered through an annual journalism award instituted in his memory. The award, announced by Chaudhary’s friend Neeraj Kumar, will be presented every February, coinciding with Chaudhary’s birth anniversary, to a journalist for outstanding work. It will carry a trophy and a cash prize of Rs 21,000. Ranchi Press Club president Shambhunath Chaudhary described Nitin as an enthusiastic and charismatic journalist who was known for his hard work and ability to get news first. A prayer meeting was held at the Ranchi Press Club on Monday. Nitin completed his journalism studies in 2010 and began his career with Prabhat Khabar in Deoghar. He moved to Ranchi in 2012 and joined Dainik Bhaskar. He was known for his reporting on railway and airport-related developments.

Senior journalist and theatre personality Shivananda Tagadur has been selected for the Karnataka Nataka Akademi Award in recognition of his contribution to theatre. The Karnataka Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) felicitated Tagadur at its state executive committee meeting held at the DVG Hall in Revenue Bhavan on Monday, August 31. Senior journalist N. Ravikumar said Tagadur had been actively involved in people’s movements even before entering journalism and had used theatre as a medium for social transformation. He said the award was not only a recognition of Tagadur’s contribution to theatre but also an honour for working journalists in Karnataka. KUWJ office-bearers and journalists from various districts congratulated and felicitated Tagadur at the event.    

Nineteen per cent of young Americans watch local television news. The figure has travelled far and wide, not least on the LinkedIn feeds of journos and PRs. The Federation of Press Clubs has condemned the registration of an FIR against Anandabazar Patrika's editorial team, calling it a serious threat to press freedom. The FIR was registered on August 28 at Bowbazar Police Station in central Kolkata, naming Ishani Dutta Ray, the newspaper's editor and Soma Mukherjee individually, along with unnamed members of its editorial team. It was filed under Sections 196, 299, 3(5) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, over Anandabazar Patrika's coverage of the August 21 clashes at Jadavpur University, in which it used the headline "Gerua Gundami" ("saffron hooliganism") to describe the vandalisation of the university's gate emblem. The Federation said the report did not name or target any particular community. The complaint was filed by Sanjay Shastri Maharaj, who  argued that saffron is associated with monasticism and renunciation, and that pairing it with "hooliganism" hurt the religious sentiments of "crores of Hindus."
