With the campaign for 2024 Lok Sabha elections reaching a crescendo, the threat of AI-generated misinformation looms large raising concerns about fake news impacting the democratic process.   In the backdrop of Microsoft's recent warning about China's alleged intentions to interfere with Indian elections using ai-generated content, the issue has become a topic of national importance with Indian government considering new AI regulations under the upcoming Digital India Bill to modernise the Information Technology Act 2000.  Nikhil Bansal, a cyberpolicy analyst at India Future Foundation, highlights the impact of AI and deepfakes on journalism and the election season. Veteran journalist Chris Uhlmann joins Sky News Australia

BBC India restructures with the launch of Collective Newsroom

The BBC has restructured its activities in India in order to adhere to the nation's regulations around foreign direct investment (FDI) with the establishment of Collective Newsroom, a new entity would enable it to meet its commitment to audiences in India and globally, while also complying with Indian FDI law.  The Collective Newsroom will be launched today at the Taj Palace in New Delhi. Sharing the news in a LinkedIn post, former BBC journalist and Founder-Director of Collective Newsroom Sanjoy Majumder stated: "After nearly 25 years with the BBC, I have left to launch the Collective Newsroom with three senior BBC colleagues - we will run the bulk of the BBC's India operations in seven languages".  The BBC has a long history in the country's media landscape, having first launched the Hindi language service in 1940. Schwartz Media has announced the appointment of Ashlynne McGhee as the interim host and executive producer of the news podcast 7am, following the departure of current host Ange McCormack.  McGhee expressed her excitement about joining the podcast saying it was a bit of a “pinch-me moment”. “Ruby, Ange and the team do such a great job of dissecting the biggest stories and most complex issues, and I’m really looking forward to carrying on that tradition until the end of June,” McGhee added.
